Photography Road Trip Part 1

I recently received the opportunity to travel with a photographer friend of mine to california to assist her with a few shoots there. I have mentioned www.whitneylewisphotography.com. I interned with whitey a few years ago and learned a ton! This trip was a chance for me to get away for a week and learn a ton about lighting and flash in the process.

We left Sunday the 9th and decided to stop in Zions National Park, St. George Utah, and Las Vegas, Nevada on our way down. Here are a few of the photos I took in Zions

We also stopped at the St. George LDS Temple to take some shots of the sunset

And finally we stopped in vegas for the night and took a few pictures while we were there

I am huge beatles fan, so we stopped at the Cirque Du Soleil Love inside the mirage

Natalie and Emilio Engagements at Exchange Place, The Gallivan Center and The Utah State Capitol

Natalie and Emilio have got to be the cutest couple! Look at these two, they are so in love and so willing to try anthing. They have such a cute and amazing story to be able to tell their kids and grandkids! Emilio is in the Army and before his first deployment these two shared an intimate ceremony with their families. Now that he is back, they have decided to have a beautiful traditional wedding, and we get the amazing opportunity to work with them. They actually met in high school but didn’t start dating until a couple years after high school. They are meant to be! It is so great to have these kinds of stories to be able to share. I think that the best part of our jobs is getting to know all of our clients and getting to her all the love stories. I just want to take a moment to thanks these two for the sacrifices and service that they provide to our country.

I love the yellow in the background, it makes this picture pop so much. And of course, look at her eyes!

What a good looking couple

The outfits, and the colors they chose were so fitting, and so nice for them.

The sunset was gorgeous. Gorgeous night + incredibly in love couple = amazing pictures!

Does this not look like we are out on the beach! It’s an amazingly beautiful picture!

Mia and Joseph Engagements at The City Library and The Salt Lake City and County Building

Mia and Joseph won our free engagement give away at the Rice Eccles Bridal Fiar. These two came so prepared with al kinds of props which was a lot of fun. We haven’t ever had a couple come with this many props, it was so much fun to come up with new ideas for them, and it made us think outside the box. It also happened to be one of the windiest days of the year, but they loved the wind, and they wanted to make sure we captured it in our pictures! What a fun, energetic and loving couple!

They are very good at “having a moment” pictures. Often while we play with light and get everything all setup we tell the couple to “have a moment” these often are some of the best pictures of the shoot, although we are really playing with light and the exposure to make sure we get the picture correct, these pictures capture the couple sometimes at the absolute best!

Is this picture not amazing? I love it all around, the umbrella worked, the light worked, it just worked!

Look at that amazing sky, it almost looks like we photoshopped them into this picture, but this is actually how the sky looked. It’s not very often that we get this much detail color in the sky, I think that it was the wind that caused it with all of the dust. It made it so we didn’t get much of a sunset, but we couldn’t have asked for a better night!

Liz and Don Engagements at Garden Park Ward and Exchange Place

These two were so much fun to photograph. We are so happy that Don suggested the Garden Park Ward for these pictures, we were able to get a lot of great pictures there. And Don was all about remembering the memories he had there, it was great. Both Don and Liz always had such great idea’s for poses as well as pictures and that helps us out a lot. Not only to help us capture who you really are, but a lot of the times, when you do a pose that you like or that you suggest we get to see you in your natural poses.

I kept saying to Justin, “make sure you get a picture of her looking up at you”. She has the eyes that I try to make sure we get pictures of.

This Ivy makes for an awesome background, especially with what they are wearing!

This is one of those that they just posed themselves, look how relaxed they look.

These are so fun to play with!

I love the City and County building, it is such a beautiful building. This view makes it look even more like a castle.

Awesome story about this, we were driving to one of our destinations, and a guy (I put his picture below as well) was pulled over on his bike with his friend taking a picture of him. Liz stopped and asked if he would be willing to let him take pictures on his bike, and look at what we were able to get, this view was breath taking!

Katherine and Justin’s engagements in Big Cottonwood Canyon

Katherine and Justin contacted us through Whitney Lewis Photography, and what a fun couple they were. They practiced some of the poses that they wanted to make sure they got. It was a lot of fun to have a bride and groom be so excited for their engagements. And to come prepared with three outfits, although we had a hard time photographing the BYU sweaters (Yes, we are avid University of Utah fans), it is important for us to get pictures that show who they are as a couple and what they like.

This would be on that they practiced, I think the practice paid off!

What an amazing dip kiss!

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes! Again, I love shoe, and shoe pictures! One day, I want to put together a book of people’s shoes.

I love that when you say “No Smiles” at least one person smiles, but who better to smile than the groom, he couldn’t wipe this smile off his face.

What a great big group picture.

Such a classically beautiful cake.

Their candy bar was so fun and had the best candy. I’m not going to lie, I had to make sure I tested this before the guests!

This is the kind of moment that we love to capture and be a part of.

Brianne and Shawn’s Wedding at Cactus and Tropicals -Getting ready, Ceremony and Traditions

What an amazing wedding. That is honestly all I have to say about this wedding. We love to see our work improve and feel this wedding was a large step in the right direction. The Bride and Groom were so happy to be there and to be getting married. Just to show you how much of a sweet heart Brianne is, she often asked us to take pictures with her and her guests. We constantly are taking pictures as people come to greet them, but she would make sure that every person had plenty of time to make sure we had the great pictures. What a genuine and sweet person, much deserved of this perfectly beautiful wedding!

…But he got her right back!

Brianne Bridals at Cactus and Tropicals

Brianne chose to do her bridals at Cactus and Tropicals which happened to be the same place as where the wedding was going to be so we were able to get a dry run to the wedding day which was really nice. We won’t tell you that we were an hour early, and we thought Brianne was late, it wasn’t until we got worried that we had the wrong place before Justin checked his phone and realized we were early. That’s ok though, it is always better to be early right, just maybe not THAT early. However, it was another beautiful day for pictures. Brianne was such a fun bride, and has the most amazing eyes.

Look at those eyes, I always get so excited to see the pictures that I put together in my head. This one came together really well. And those flowers, aren’t they so pretty?

What awesome colors again, we had such good luck with color this year, it is always great to be able to get this kind background.

A woman after my own taste, multiple shoes for your bridals… brilliant!

Ann Bridals at Joseph Smith Memorial Building

Justin and I have never shot at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building so we were really excited to be able to shoot there with Ann. She chose to go here, and we absolutely loved it. What a gorgeous place and gorgeous day to pick. We even had time to go around and play outside. Which means we went over the The Lion House to take a few. It’s always so hard to go shoot over there, they are always making their fresh rolls which instantly made all of us hungry. But we got one of my favorites of the shot there, so it was well worth it.

Isn’t this shot great! I love the leading lines, right to our beautiful bride!

Brianne and Shawn engagements at Brighton Ski Resort, Solitude Ski Resort and Big Cottonwood Canyon

The canyons are such an amazing place to shoot. We are usually able and love going up and working our way back down. This is the first time we went up as far as Brighton, but it made for some amazing pictures. Right when we got up there it started to snow, right after we just had a big snow storm. Brianne and Shawn were such troopers, they didn’t complain once about being cold. Neither did Brianne’s mom, Leslie. Granted, Brianne and Shawn are avid Snow Boarders so they are used to this kind of weather and were excited about the snow, I am not sure that Justin, Leslie and I could say the same. We love and enjoy shooting in this kind of weather, it is sometimes just hard on the couple. They also wanted to get a few pictures for their Thank you card which were a lot of fun to do. It is a great thing for us to be able to do some formals before the wedding! This way we make sure we have time for all of the photo’s the bride and groom want at the wedding.

How fun is this picture? We are so happy and lucky they had both these umbrella’s. They came prepared!

These snowboards are so colorful!

Look at the contract with the snow and the color behind them. A-mazing!

This is another amazing thing about the canyons, the further down we get, the less or no snow there is. Almost makes it look like we did two separate days.
